About the artist
His work was noted for its precise detail, narrative richness, and emphasis on moral and social symbolism. He made three trips to the Middle East so he could infuse his biblical scenes with authentic local detail. Hunt faced criticism of his work as did his Pre-Raphaelite peers, but his the moral gravity of his art eventually won the Victorian public's hearts. Consequently, he earned hefty sums from the sale of his paintings' engravings. Later in life, Hunt became an authoritative figure in the art scene and received the Order of Merit in 1905. The same year, he released his book 'Pre-Raphaelitism and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.'
