About the artist
Initially, von Klever dabbled in architecture studies before swiftly transitioning to landscape painting. His artistic journey began under the tutelage of Sokrat Vorobiev, later moving on to study with Mikhail Clodt.
In an unexpected turn of events, von Klever found himself ousted from the Academy in 1870, with the reasons remaining a mystery. Nine years later, he and amateur painter turned actor, Vasily Samoylov, ventured to Nargen island. The works created from this excursion were highly admired, securing purchases from Pavel Tretyakov, the Imperial Family, and even Tsar Alexander III.
During this period, von Klever was swamped with commissions, often churning out completed pieces in a day and even hiring assistants for underpainting tasks. His love for art was familial; three of his four kids pursued careers in painting.
