About the artist
John Duncan (1866-1945) was a significant player in the Celtic Revival within Scottish art. Originally from Dundee, he refined his illustrating skills there before furthering his studies and work in Antwerp and London. In 1892, Duncan made Edinburgh his home. He played a significant part in the Symbolist movement across Europe. His sources of inspiration were diverse, including Celtic images and the early Italian Renaissance. Duncan was known for his versatility, producing everything from book illustrations and stained glass to tempera paintings and murals.
