About this artwork

'Virgin of the Rocks' is a masterpiece painted by Italian Renaissance artist, Leonardo Da Vinci. This work was a segment of a grand altarpiece made for the San Francesco Grande Church in Milan. This was commissioned to commemorate the Immaculate Conception of Mary, which was the moment when Christ was conceived in her womb. In the painting, you can see Mary, Saint John the Baptist, an angel, all kneeling down to the baby Christ. Da Vinci used avant-garde painting methods, creating an illusion that these figures were emerging from darkness. The print is color coordinated with the original piece and has the approval of the National Gallery. Purchasing this supports the museum's activities.

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was an Italian polymath, well known for his contributions to the fields of painting, sculpting, architecture, science, mathematics, engineering, anatomy, geology, botany, and cartography. He was one of the most influential artists of the High Renaissance period, and his works are well known for their technical mastery and innovative use of perspective. His personal life was marked by a deep interest in science and technology, and he was also a prolific inventor.
