About the artist

Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) was an English painter and printmaker. He was a founding member of the Royal Academy and is best known for his portraits and landscapes. He was a master of the Rococo style, which was popular in England during the 18th century. His works were influenced by the Dutch masters, particularly Rembrandt and Rubens. He was also known for his sensitive and sympathetic portrayal of his sitters. Gainsborough was a successful artist in his lifetime and was highly regarded by his contemporaries.
