About the artist
The son of a Carlisle house-painter, he first learned to draw under Captain John Bernard Gilpin. His talent was eventually recognised by Sir Joshua Reynolds and he became a student at the prestigious Royal Academy. In 1779 and 1780, he exhibited portraits at the Royal Academy and had his works showcased at the Society of Artists at Spring Gardens.
Head spent several years residing in Rome, returning to England amidst the Revolutionary outbreak in 1798. He brought back numerous drawings, copies, and other pieces he planned to exhibit, but his life was cut short when he died unexpectedly in London on 16 December 1800.
