Pieter Bruegel The Elder (1525-1569) was a Flemish Renaissance painter and printmaker known for his landscapes and peasant scenes. He was a pioneer of genre painting and his style was a precursor to the Baroque. He was influenced by the Italian Renaissance and the work of Hieronymus Bosch. Bruegel was a devout Catholic and his works often contained moral and religious messages. He was also a skilled draughtsman and engraver.
