About this artwork

Pieter Bruegel The Elder was a major player in the Dutch Renaissance art scene. He broke away from the traditional religious themes that were prevalent in early European artwork, introducing ground-breaking portrayals of landscapes and peasant life. His painting 'The Census at Bethlehem' portrays a Flemish village in the aftermath of the winter of 1565, which was one of the toughest on record. This painting is also considered a modern take on the biblical narrative of the Census of Quirinius, with Bruegel incorporating religious characters like Joseph and a pregnant Virgin Mary on a donkey.

About the artist

Pieter Bruegel The Elder (1525-1569) was a Flemish Renaissance painter and printmaker known for his landscapes and peasant scenes. He was a pioneer of genre painting and his style was a precursor to the Baroque. He was influenced by the Italian Renaissance and the work of Hieronymus Bosch. Bruegel was a devout Catholic and his works often contained moral and religious messages. He was also a skilled draughtsman and engraver.
