About this artwork

The picturesque landscapes were influenced by a style of Elizabethan embroidery known as 'Blackwork'. This style was introduced to King Henry VIII's court by Catherine of Aragon. The designs were intricate and conveniently useful for concealing dirt. This idea struck a chord with Charlene Mullen when she started to notice the various patterns adorning the buildings in London. She drew her favourite scene of Tower Bridge and the City of London, featuring a range of buildings that date all the way back to 1078, standing side by side with modern structures like the Gherkin. Her artwork is sprinkled with playful touches like the rooks at the Tower of London and a quirky skull and crossbones next to the St George’s flag. There’s a stealthy cat lurking amongst the trees, keeping a close eye on the birds. Cranes are hard at work constructing new buildings, and a pop of red brightens the scene - a colour that always catches the eye first.
