About the artist
Peter Tillemans (circa 1684 – 5 December 1734), a Flemish painter, gained prominence for his sporting and topographical artworks. As a cofounder of the English school of sporting painting, alongside John Wootton and James Seymour, he played a crucial role. Born and educated in Antwerp, Tillemans was transported to England in 1708 to reproduce old master paintings for a picture dealer. Specialising in topographical landscapes, he journeyed through England and Wales, illustrating estates and residences. He was a linchpin in London's art scene, educating Nollekens and Arthur Devis. Tillemans also painted backdrops and resided in England from 1708 until his passing.
