Te Rerioa' is a masterpiece created by Paul Gauguin, a well known French post-impressionist artist, during his second visit to Tahiti. The painting beautifully portrays two women guarding a child asleep in a room that's adorned with intricate wood carvings. The unique aspect of Gauguin's work is the ambiguity of the subject matter, emphasised by the way the two women are positioned back-to-back. About the artist

Paul Gauguin (7 June 1848 – 8 May 1903) was a French Post-Impressionist artist who was not only a painter, but also a sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist and writer. He was an important figure in the Symbolist movement and his bold use of colour and synthetist style of painting influenced the development of modern art. He spent time in Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands, where he produced some of his most famous works. His personal life was often tumultuous, and he was married twice and had five children. He was also a mentor to the artist Émile Bernard.
