About this artwork

Amedeo Modigliani was a Jewish artist from Italy who spent most of his career in France. He was a painter and a sculptor who created over seventy sketches of caryatids. These are sculpted women that were designed to function as architectural features, replacing the traditional column or pillar. Modigliani was also heavily influenced by African art, and you can see this in the unique, stylised way he depicted the caryatids, giving them mask-like faces.

About the artist

Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) was an Italian painter and sculptor who worked mainly in France. He was a leading figure in the early 20th century avant-garde movement, and his style was influenced by African, Greek, Egyptian and Byzantine art. He was known for his elongated figures and portraits, and his works are often characterised by their mask-like faces and elongated necks. Modigliani's personal life was marked by poverty, illness and addiction, and he died at the age of 35.
