About the artist
Pierre Bonnard (3 October 1867 – 23 January 1947) was a French painter and printmaker, as well as a founding member of the Post-Impressionist group of avant-garde painters Les Nabis. He was strongly influenced by the work of Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin, and his work was characterised by a rich use of colour and by an intimate domestic setting. Bonnard's early work was typically Impressionist in style, but later he adopted a more Symbolist approach. He was also a prolific printmaker, producing lithographs, etchings, and book illustrations.
