About this artwork

Paul Cezanne, a well known French impressionist painter, created this depiction of a footpath beside a pond when he was visiting his buddy, fellow artist Camille Pissarro, in Osny, a small town north of Paris. Cezanne employed a palette knife to layer the paint thickly, resulting in the dynamic and textured appearance of the piece. This reproduction is color matched to the original artwork and has received the Courtauld Gallery's seal of approval. Every purchase contributes to the Courtauld's ongoing efforts.

About the artist

Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) was a French Post-Impressionist painter whose work laid the foundations of the transition from the 19th-century conception of artistic endeavor to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century. His often repetitive, exploratory brushstrokes are highly characteristic and clearly recognizable. He used planes of colour and small brushstrokes that build up to form complex fields. He was a master of still life, landscape and portraiture. Cézanne's work demonstrates a mastery of design, colour, composition and draftsmanship. He was heavily influenced by the old masters, and his exploration of geometric simplification and optical phenomena inspired the Cubists.
