About this artwork

Carl Larsson, a Swedish artist from the 19th century, was closely linked to the Arts and Crafts movement. He created 'Breakfast in the Open' during the summer of 1910, while staying on the petite island of Bullerholmen, close to Stockholm. In this watercolour, Larsson paints a picture of an idealistic country lifestyle featuring his family, who are visible dining outdoors on the left side of the artwork. In the front, you can see Larsson's daughter Lisbeth, who is leaning casually against a tree, seemingly detached from the surrounding hustle and bustle.

About the artist

Carl Larsson was a Swedish painter and interior designer who is best known for his watercolours of idyllic family scenes. He was born in 1853 in Stockholm and studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts. His works often featured his wife, Karin Bergöö, and their eight children. He was a prolific artist, producing over 4,000 works in his lifetime. His style was heavily influenced by the French Impressionists, and he was a major contributor to the development of Swedish art.
