About the artist
In Paris, he started painting under François Bonvin's tutelage, and showcased his work at the Salons. It was here that he met Claude Monet, Georges Seurat, and Paul Signac. Influenced by these well known painters, Cross's painting style evolved. His use of colour became more striking, his brushwork started embodying energetic colour patches, and his art started reflecting the atmospheric nuances celebrated by the Impressionists.
Cross, along with Signac, became a big advocate of Pointillism, with his artwork increasingly reflecting Divisionist colour principles. Sadly, Cross developed severe rheumatism in his later years and had to move to Saint-Clair, where he carried on with his work until he died.
