About this artwork

John Constable was a respected UK artist who brought a fresh perspective to the field of landscape art. He created several paintings of Salisbury cathedral in the quaint town of Salisbury in the south-west part of England. For this particular cathedral scene, Constable chose to paint from the bishop's garden.

About the artist

John Constable , 1776-1837, was an English Romantic painter known for his landscape paintings of the English countryside. He was a major influence in the development of the English landscape school and was one of the first painters to depict nature realistically. Constable was born in Suffolk and studied at the Royal Academy in London. He was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and was elected a full member of the Royal Academy in 1829. Constable's works are held in many public collections, including the Tate Gallery in London.
