About the artist
Charles Robert Cockerell was an English architect, archaeologist, and writer. He was born in London in 1788 and was educated at the Royal Academy Schools. He was a founding member of the Athenaeum Club and was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. Cockerell was a prolific and influential architect, designing many buildings in the Greek Revival style. He was also a well known archaeologist, travelling to Greece and Italy to study ancient ruins. He wrote extensively on his travels and his work was highly regarded by his contemporaries.
