About the artist
Born in 1884 in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, UK, Stanislaus Soutten Longley was a multifaceted illustrator and poster designer. He refined his skills under Harry Watson at the Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art, differentiating him from Chilton Langley, an artist with a dissimilar style. He served in the East Surrey Regiment during WW1 from 1915 to 1917. Post-war, he created a vast spectrum of Jazz Age illustrations and watercolours, particularly of Devon and the South coast. His vibrant, eclectic works often found a place in well known magazines like The Sketch, The Tatler, and The Graphic. His designs for the London Underground showed a range from light, delicate landscapes to bold art deco compositions and romantic stylised settings, reminiscent of Lowry-esque figures.
