About the artist
Pieter Irwin Brown was a native of Rotterdam, studied at a local art school. By 18, he had moved on to a two-year stint at the Royal Academy in Amsterdam. His artistic pursuits led him to explore Europe and Africa extensively.
On moving to London, Brown started working for Leigh Breton Studio and eventually embarked on his own entrepreneurial journey, setting up a design business with his partner, Rickman Ralph. Their venture, R & B Studios, was responsible for designing posters for several organizations, including the Underground Group, London Midland & Scottish and Great Western Railways, and London County Council Tramways.
Brown's travels in the 1930s took him to Indonesia, Japan, and China where he produced a series of 20 to 30 woodblock prints in a Japanese style. In 1940, he relocated to America, where he adopted the name Pieter van Oort. He finally settled in New York in 1946, marking the start of another chapter in his artistic journey
