John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was an American painter, best known for his portraits of wealthy and influential figures. He was born in Florence, Italy to American parents and was trained in Paris and London. He was a leading portrait painter of his generation, and his style was influenced by the French Impressionists. He was also a prolific watercolourist and a member of the Royal Academy. Sargent was known for his bold brushwork and attention to detail. He was also a successful muralist, creating works for the Boston Public Library and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
