About this artwork

Johannes Vermeer was a painter from the Dutch Baroque Period known for his focus on domestic interior scenes. He's celebrated for his expert manipulation and application of light in his artwork, often approaching his pieces with deliberate care and using high-priced pigments. One of his paintings, 'View of Delft', was a depiction of his original hometown. This piece was created during a period when cityscape art was still quite rare. There's a belief that Vermeer used an optical device to create this painting - perhaps a camera obscura or a telescope to capture the fine details.

About the artist

Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) was a Dutch Baroque painter who is known for his masterful use of light and colour. He was a member of the Delft School, a group of Dutch Golden Age painters who were active in the city of Delft. Vermeer's works are known for their realism and attention to detail, and his use of light and colour has been widely admired. He was also known for his use of symbolism and allegory in his works. Vermeer's personal life is largely unknown, but it is believed that he had a large family and was a successful art dealer.
