About the artist
Born in Caldbeck, Northumberland in 1891 and passing away in 1946, Joseph Greenup had an accomplished career as a painter and illustrator. As a child, his family relocated to Minworth near Birmingham, leading him to enrol in the Birmingham School of Art in 1904. By 1907, he was awarded a scholarship to the RCA, graduating in 1912. From July 23rd, 1914, he studied at the RA Schools before leaving to serve in the army in 1915. During WWI, Greenup saw active service and served as an Officer in the 12th London Regiment attached to the Royal Flying Corps.
In the 1920s, Greenup turned his talents to illustration, creating artwork for Pearsons Magazines, LNER railway posters and the book 'Captain Blood'. His work was showcased at the RA and is featured in the collections of the National Railway Museum and the Mercer Art Gallery in Harrogate.
