About this artwork

During World War II, the British government took unprecedented steps to intervene in daily life at home. They kicked off food rationing in 1940 and created a poster to push folks to grow their own food. The poster, which featured the word 'food' created from different veggies, was meant to motivate people to produce their own veggies. This reproduction is color-matched to the original and got the green light from the Imperial War Museum. Every time someone buys this, they're helping support the museum's work.

About the artist

Born on 9 December 1898 in Kempen, Posen, Prussia, now Poland, to Jewish parents, he relocated to Berlin at age six. At 20, he took on the last name Schleger and studied under Emil Orlik at the Kunstgewerbeschule from 1918 to 1921.

He kicked off his career in Berlin and moved to England in 1932, contributing significantly to London's early 1930s avant-garde design community. Schleger played a crucial role in popularizing modernism in Britain. His most famous work, the London Transport bus-stop sign, was commissioned in 1935 by Frank Pick and remains largely unaltered.

He became a British citisen in 1939 and designed posters for the War Office, Ministry for Food, and the London Passenger Transport Board during World War II. His work featured in London's 1946 Britain Can Make It exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum.

Post-war, he associated with Mather & Crowther agency before launching his own company, Hans Schleger & Associates, in 1953.
