Andy Warhol's iconic Campbell's Soup Cans are some of the most identifiable and admired pieces in art history. Warhol started creating his Campbell's Soup Can art pieces around 1961, and his approach to the subject would evolve over time. The Ferus variation of Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup can art, named after the thirty-two individual can paintings showcased at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles, are the most extensive and well known of Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup art pieces. For these pieces, Warhol painted the famous red and white cans, using a product list provided by the Campbell Soup Company and marking off each soup variant as he finished it. A subsequent series of Campbell’s Soup cans, created around 1965, consisted of nineteen uniquely colored cans. In these pieces, Warhol didn't just use unusual ink colors, he also spray painted the backdrops and the lower white section of the label in various shades. The outcome was a set of work that was simultaneously surprising and recognizable. With these innovative pieces, Warhol forced us to rethink how we perceive art.
