About the artist
Levaillant undertook three expeditions: one around Cape Town and Saldanha Bay from April to August 1781, another eastwards from the Cape between December 1781 to May 1783, and finally, a journey to the Orange River and into Great Namaqualand from June 1783 to around May 1784.
He even commissioned a massive illustrative map around 1790 for King Louis XVI, measuring nine feet wide and six feet high, detailing his travels as well as the landscape. The map was adorned with sixty-two pictures of the local fauna and flora.
