About the artist
Adolphe William Bouguereau (1825-1905) was a French academic painter well known for his classical, idealised depictions of the human form. He was a leading figure in the French art movement of the 19th century, the Academic art, and was influenced by the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Bouguereau was a highly successful artist, receiving numerous awards and commissions throughout his career. He was also a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and a member of the Institut de France.
