About this artwork

Back in the 1890's, several dance groups hailing from Eastern Europe showcased their talent in Paris, and this pastel artwork might just be a portrayal of these dancers dressed in traditional folk wear. Edgar Degas made this drawing on tracing paper, giving him the flexibility to flip individual figures and mix dancers in a variety of layouts. This reproduction has been color aligned with the original and got the nod of approval from the National Gallery. Each purchase contributes to the museum's ongoing work.

About the artist

Edgar Degas (1834-1917) was a French Impressionist artist well known for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings of ballet dancers, race horses, and other scenes of modern life. He was a master of the use of pastels and is particularly identified with the subject of the dance. Degas also explored the expressive potential of photography, and was an early adopter of the medium. He was a close friend of many Impressionist painters, including Mary Cassatt and Édouard Manet.
