About this artwork
In 1888, Monet created a painting of this exact location. His artwork featured shades of aqua and turquoise, contrasting against a backdrop of violet and duck egg hues. I recall being fascinated by the intensity of the colours which seemed to fluctuate throughout the day, from rich blues to a misty violet. The town's layout is an architectural marvel, boasting a rhythmic geometry. Its sturdy walls make way for petite windows and compact homes. The Picasso museum takes up a significant part of the town's main building. I didn't visit the Picasso museum, and I'm not entirely sure why. Perhaps, I've seen Picasso's perspective too many times and I think it's important to have my own viewpoint without being overshadowed by another artist's influence. That's one of the reasons why I prefer working with egg tempera - it pushes me to come up with an original interpretation. It would've been a disaster if I'd shown up with a plein air oil setup and accidentally copied Monet. Instead, I just brought my photos back home and began recreating these scenes from memory after my return. - Andrew Lansley
