About this artwork

"Monet created this particular scene on canvas back in 1888. His painting is a burst of aqua and turquoise hues, set against a backdrop of violet and duck egg shades. I recall being taken aback by the vibrant colors that appeared to continuously shift throughout the day, from deep blues to a purple haze. The town's architecture is a rhythmic geometric marvel with its sturdy walls opening up to petite windows and compact homes. The Picasso museum takes up the lion's share of the town's central structure. I didn't set foot in the Picasso museum in my trip. I can't pinpoint why. Perhaps I felt I had seen Picasso's perspectives one too many times and craved to maintain my own viewpoint without being overshadowed by another artist's influence. That's one of the reasons I enjoy working with egg tempera. It pushes me to create something unique, something original. It would have been a disaster if I had arrived with a plein air oil kit and risked imitating Monet. Instead, I took my captures back home and recalled these visuals once I was comfortably settled back." Andrew Lansley
