About the artist
Adolph Northen, a German painter affiliated with the Düsseldorf school, was born in Münden, Hanover on November 6, 1828. well known for his portrayals of military conflicts, particularly those from the Napoleonic Wars, Northen's notable masterpieces include "Napoleon's Retreat from Russia," depicting the failure of Napoleon's 1812 Russian invasion. Another well known piece, "Prussian Attack at Plancenoit," captures the defeat of the French Imperial Young Guard by Prussian divisions commanded by Hiller, Ryssel, and Tippelskirch. Among Northen's famous works are "1st Battalions of the 2nd Grenadiers" and "2nd Chasseurs at the Battle of Waterloo." He died on May 28, 1876.
