About the artist
Willie Christie, a well known British fashion photographer and film director, is acclaimed for his distinct portraits of The Rolling Stones, Grace Jones, and David Bowie. Christie had wanted a career in film since he was 14, with photography never crossing his mind until his sister dated leading fashion photographer David Anthony in 1968. Volunteering as Anthony's assistant during his assistant's absence, Christie discovered a passion for photography and lighting. After developed his talent with Vogue photographer Clive Arrowsmith and building his own portfolio. It was here Christie met and eventually married Grace Coddington who worked closely with Arrowsmith. Christie's career as a full-time photographer launched in 1973 with a commission from Over 21 Magazine. Gaining recognition, he began to shoot for Vogue independently, producing 12 Vogue covers and countless spreads in the 70s and 80s. His impressive portfolio includes award-winning ads for L'Oreal and Yves St Laurent, portraits of Cary Grant, and album covers for the Rolling Stones.
