About the artist
Thiebaud kickstarted his painting career in the 1950s, melding gestural brushwork, commonplace subjects, and commercial imagery. He's famed for his depictions of cakes, pies, and candies in a classic diner style, emphasizing their aesthetic as much as their taste. He brought this to life by using synthetic colours, painting with a knife, and repeating objects like a production line, thereby modernizing the traditional still-life genre for an era of mass production and consumption.
From 1959, Thiebaud devoted his life to teaching, first at Sacramento City College, and later at the University of California in Davis.
