About this artwork

Improvisation 31' is the title used by Wassily Kandinsky for a collection of his artwork created between 1909 and 1913. He referred to these pieces as being predominantly unconscious, spontaneously expressing a non-physical, inherent nature. While at first glance the dynamic shapes and vibrant strokes may seem wholly abstract, they actually create multiple identifiable images. Take, for instance, the core pattern of two battling sailboats encircled by cannons firing in their direction. This is believed to symbolise the end-of-the-world visions found in the last book of the New Testament.

About the artist

Wassily Kandinsky , born on December 16, 1866 and died on December 13, 1944, was a Russian painter and art theorist. He is credited as the pioneer of abstract art and is one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. He was a leader of the avant-garde movement Der Blaue Reiter and was a professor at the Bauhaus school of art. His works are characterised by a strong sense of colour and form, and his theories on art were highly influential. Kandinsky was also a pianist and a philosopher, and his works were heavily influenced by music and spiritualism.
