About the artist
Originating from East Dulwich, Spradbery eventually settled in Walthamstow. His education at Walthamstow School of Art led him back there as a teacher later. He was a passionate pacifist and found served in the Royal Army Medical Corps during WWI, where his watercolours vividly documented the heart-wrenching realities. Post WWII, Spradbery played a pivotal role in opening the William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow in 1950 and also championed the early efforts for Nuclear Disarmament.
The beauty of flowers and plants fascinated Spradbery yet his reputation was as a landscape artist. The variety in his posters for promoting London's transport network excursions is impressive. His work is shown in the collections of the London Transport Museum, the V&A Museum and A retrospective exhibition was held at the William Morris Gallery, London, in 1970.
