About this artwork

This picture of a solitary chair on a stark terracotta floor is one of the most recognised works by Vincent van Gogh. Crafted in the later part of 1888, this was around the time when fellow painter Paul Gauguin spent time with him in Arles, in the south of France. This image is actually part of a pair, with one showing the chair facing to the left, while this one has the chair facing to the right. The chairs serve as a symbol of the contrasting personalities and unique artistic perspectives of the two artists. Van Gogh's chair is depicted as plain and practical, while Gauguin's is portrayed as refined and intricately carved. This print is color coordinated with the original painting and has the stamp of approval from the National Gallery. Every purchase contributes towards the ongoing work of the museum.

About the artist

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His style was heavily influenced by Impressionism, Symbolism and Japanese woodblock prints. He was a prolific artist, producing more than 2,000 artworks in his lifetime, including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. His personal life was marked by mental illness and poverty.
