About this artwork

Vincent van Gogh, a Dutch Post-Impressionist artist, was known for his dynamic array of art pieces ranging from landscapes to self-portraits, all notable for their vibrant colors and passionate brushstrokes. One of his works, ‘Langlois Bridge at Arles,’ was made in 1888 when he resided in Arles, a city in southern France. Van Gogh's depiction of the drawbridge over the canal was reminiscent of his native Netherlands. His painting technique involved impasto, which is the application of thick paint, and he skillfully used color to portray light reflections in his art piece.

About the artist

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His style was heavily influenced by Impressionism, Symbolism and Japanese woodblock prints. He was a prolific artist, producing more than 2,000 artworks in his lifetime, including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. His personal life was marked by mental illness and poverty.
