About the artist

Born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1895, Verney Lionel Danby Danvers (1895-1973) was a celebrated British graphic and commercial artist. He gained recognition for his distinctive poster designs for entities like London Transport, Shell-Mex & BP, and railway companies including the London & North Eastern Railway, Southern Railway, and British Railways.

Danver's father was an electrical engineer for the Edison Gower-Bell Company. In 1902, the family moved from Portugal to England. Danvers started his artistic education at Hornsey College of Art in 1911. By the 1920s, he was well-established in his field, creating commercial art for various railway and tram companies, as well as other clients like Shell and fashion house Bobby & Co.
