About the artist

Vanessa Bell, a British painter and designer (1879-1961).She was key figure in the Bloomsbury Group, like her husband Clive Bell and sister, Virginia Woolf. Her early work until 1910 and post-WWI pieces were tasteful, upholding the New English Art Club's traditions. However, during a brief period, she pioneered progressive ideas in British art. Influenced by the Post-Impressionist exhibits of her lover, Roger Fry, she started using vibrant colours and bold brushstrokes. By 1914, she had fully embraced abstract art. Her designs for Fry's Omega Workshops, such as a folding screen, bore Matisse's unmistakable influence.
