About the artist
Titian (Tiziano Vecellio, 1488-1576) was an Italian painter of the High Renaissance period, well known for his use of colour and his masterful technique. He was a major influence on the Venetian school of painting, and his works are considered some of the most important in the history of Western art. Titian was born in Pieve di Cadore, in the Republic of Venice, and was apprenticed to the artist Sebastiano Zuccato. He later worked with Giorgione and Giovanni Bellini, and was a close friend of the poet Pietro Aretino. Titian was also a court painter for the ruling families of Venice, and was knighted by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V.
