About this artwork

The Irish artist, Sir William Orpen, spent most of his career in London and served during World War One. He then got dispatched to the Western Front where he busied himself with creating sketches and paintings of common soldiers and captured enemies. Not long after arriving in France, Orpen painted 'Ready To Start - Self Portrait', a piece that showcased him checking out his reflection in the mirror while wearing his military attire. The painting is embellished with vivid, patterned, and textured elements that would later become trademarks of his artistic approach. The Imperial War Museum has approved this print, ensuring its colours match perfectly with the original. Every purchase aids the efforts of the museum.

About the artist

Sir William Orpen (1878-1931) was an Irish portrait painter and war artist. He was a leading figure in the Newlyn School of painters and a member of the Royal Academy. Orpen was born in Stillorgan, County Dublin and studied at the Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin and the Slade School of Art in London. He was a successful portrait painter, painting many of the leading figures of the day, including the British Royal Family. Orpen was also an official war artist during World War I, painting scenes of the Western Front. He was knighted in 1918 for his services to art.
