About the artist
Embracing the allure of his epoch, Lawrence was a true Romantic. He remained an avid learner, amassing a rich collection of Old Master drawings, especially from Michelangelo and Raphael. Despite his professional successes, Lawrence often struggled financially, resulting in uneven and sometimes haphazard work due to excessive commissions. After his death, his reputation diminished and never fully recovered.
Lawrence played a significant role in establishing the National Gallery, acquiring the Elgin Marbles for the nation, and was known for his generous support to budding artists.
