About the artist
Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912) was a Dutch-born British painter of classical subjects, especially from ancient history and mythology. He was a leading member of the Victorian Neo-Classical movement, and his paintings often featured scenes from ancient Greek and Roman life. Alma-Tadema was born in Dronrijp, the Netherlands, and studied at the Royal Academy of Antwerp. He moved to London in 1870, and his works were popular with the British public. He was knighted in 1899 and died in 1912.
