About the artist
In the 1790s, Raeburn developed a distinctive style marked by vivid backlighting and scattering across the canvas, establishing him as a sought-after portraitist. His full-length portraits, especially of Scottish Highland chiefs and lairds in military dress, attracted significant attention in London.
In 1819, he joined the American Academy of Fine Arts, became a Royal Society of Edinburgh fellow in 1820, received knighthood in 1822, and was appointed as King George IV's Painter and Limner in 1823. Unfortunately, a sudden fever, likely caught during a trip to Fife, claimed his life in July 1823.
