About the artist
His father, the esteemed painter Thomas Dicksee, nurtured his artistic abilities from a young age, also teaching his sister Margaret the art of painting. During the height of Francis's career, he earned the moniker "Victorian Painter" from the Royal House and was awarded the Royal Victorian Order, a prestigious honour named for Queen Victoria, by the British Monarch.
In recognition of his significant contributions to the commonwealth, Dicksee was also knighted. In the early stages of his career, he was influenced by Romanticism, a movement focused on human emotions, subjectivity, and historical perspectives. His art was heavily influenced by the likes of Frederic Leighton and the idealist, Henry Holiday, showing a strong favoritism towards portraits, figurative expressions, and historical perspectives.
