About the artist

Born on 22 August 1779 into a Quaker family in Walworth, Surrey, England, Samuel Curtis was an active nurseryman, editor, and publisher in the 19th-century London. In 1800, he took over Walworth nursery from Goring and Wright and, a year later, married Sarah Caustin, the daughter of his first cousin, botanist William Curtis. Curtis inherited the Botanical Magazine from William, becoming its proprietor.

Joining the Linnean Society as a fellow in 1810, Curtis published the second English edition of James Maddox's Florist's Directory. He is recognised for publishing two key works between 1806 and 1820 — A Monograph on the Genus Camellia (1819), dedicated to the Duchess of Norfolk, and Beauties of Flora. Both works featured colour plates by Claria Maria Pope and Thomas Baxter.

Curtis ended his tenure at the Walworth nursery shortly after 1825. He sold the Botanical Magazine around 1846 and retired to Jersey, Channel Islands. In 1850, he was asked to design the first public park in Nottingham, England, the Nottingham Arboretum. Curtis died in 1860.
