About the artist
From 1906 to 1910, he served as curator of paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. However, upon 'discovering' Cézanne that same year, he redirected his focus from the Italian Old Masters, who had initially formed the foundation of his scholarly reputation.
Fry became a leading advocate for contemporary French art during his era and was the first person to coin the term "Post-Impressionism". He played a crucial role in increasing public consciousness about modern art in Britain, prioritizing the formal attributes of paintings over the "associated ideas" evoked in the viewer by their depiction.
