About this artwork

During WWII, the Labor Department ordered several posters, among them was one featuring a young nurse in surgical scrubs. The goal of these posters was to inspire people to seek training for healthcare jobs to assist with the war efforts. This particular print was color matched with the original and given the thumbs up by the Imperial War Museum. Your purchase of this print will directly support the museum's efforts.

About the artist

Aubrey Rix, a revered British illustrator (1915-2002), dominated the field of commercial illustration from the late 1940s through the 1960s. He became well known for his fascinating "Rix face," marked by beautiful eyes on women and a square jaw on men. Displaying both energy and enthusiasm, his fashionable illustrations, unique page layouts, and eye-catching advertisements graced global newspapers, magazines, and billboards.

Aubrey Hardcastle Rix was born in Oxford raised in Wallasey, Cheshire. Despite his short stint at Liverpool Art School, Rix embarked on a successful career that despite disparagers who doubted his abilities.Rix was a consciencious objector during the war which led him to various alternative roles, including ambulance driving and farming in Wales.

His career soared following a cover design for Woman's Own that resonated with young, confident couples of the 1950s, paving the way for consistent work over two decades. Rix expanded his portfolio by producing striking advertisements for brands like Clark's Shoes, Embassy cigarettes, BOAC, Rank Xerox, Nestlé, and the London Evening Standard. Rix also adopted pseudonyms like "Mr. Aubrey" and "Xiros" to manage his increasing workload.

Rix was known for his charm, humour, and love for the finer things in life.He owned properties in Chiswick Mall and Spain, a Rolls-Royce, a yacht, and developed an interest in medicine.
