About the artist

Born on April 22, 1922, and passing away on March 30, 1993, Richard Diebenkorn was a prominent figure in American art, well known for his painting and printmaking. Diebenkorn's early artistic endeavors were linked to abstract expressionism and the Bay Area Figurative Movement that swept across the 1950s and 1960s.

Across his four-decade long career, Diebenkorn experienced three distinct artistic phases. The 1950s saw him exploring Abstraction, a style that was gaining traction on the East Coast. However, in the mid-1950s, he made an unexpected switch to figuration, which continued until the mid-1960s. Diebenkorn embraced Abstraction once again in the late 1960s, laying the groundwork for his acclaimed Ocean Park series.

His abstract, geometric masterpieces played a crucial role in gaining him international acclaim. The Boston Globe lauded these works as "some of the most beautiful pieces of art created in America, or indeed the world, post-World War II." well known for his enchanting colour palettes and finely-tuned compositions, Diebenkorn drew significant inspiration from the lighting and atmosphere of his workspaces, which greatly influenced his art.
