About the artist

René Bouët-Willaumez, a French aristocrat, was born in Brittany in 1900 and died in 1979. Following a change from engineering to art, and backed by Main Bocher, the French Vogue editor, Willaumez began his journey with Vogue in 1929. This was a time when the industry was shifting towards photography as the primary means of showcasing fashion trends. Yet, this shift didn't deter Willaumez. His decisive and potent ink drawings brought a fresh perspective to the fashion world, creating a niche for himself.

Willaumez, along with Carl Erickson and René Bouché, commanded the fashion illustrations of their time. They held a distinguished position in the industry with their unparalleled ability to capture haute couture with undeniable style. Willaumez was slightly younger than Erickson, sparking a competitive, occasionally contentious, relationship that lasted throughout their careers.

Willaumez's work took him from Paris to London, and eventually to New York. In the 1940s, while in New York, his fashionable style was put to good use by the American editor of Vogue. Willaumez remained with Vogue until the early 1950s.
