About this artwork

Rembrandt was a 17th-century Dutch painter and printmaker, famous for his versatility in portraying a broad spectrum of subjects. From portraits to landscapes and mythological depictions, he was unlike his contemporaries. One of his works, 'The Shell (Conus Marmoreus),' is a drypoint and etching masterpiece made in 1650. It portrays the shell of a marbled cone, a scarce commodity in Europe then, primarily imported from the Indian Ocean.

About the artist

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) was a Dutch painter and etcher who is widely considered one of the greatest visual artists in the history of art. He was a master of the Dutch Golden Age and is well known for his dramatic use of light and shadow, as well as his expressive and emotive portraits. His works were heavily influenced by his religious beliefs and his personal life, which included a tumultuous marriage and a number of financial difficulties. Rembrandt was also a prolific printmaker, producing over 300 etchings and drypoints.
